Choosing between Wedding Unity Ceremonies



Wedding unity ceremonies are included in many weddings as a symbolic joining of husband and wife. There are many different types of ceremonies from which you can choose. The most traditional and popular is the unity candle. The unity candle features three candles. There are two candles on either side of the unity candle, which sits in the middle. Tradition dictates that the mother of the groom and the mother of the bride light the two candles surrounding the unity candle. The unity candle itself is lit by the bride and groom.

Another popular and trendy type of unity ceremony is the sand ceremony. If you happened to see the wedding between TV Bachelorette Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter, you saw they used sand for their ceremony. For this, you will need three containers. The bride and groom each have a container of sand which they pour into the third container. The sand is sometimes a different color for the bride and groom. When the sand is poured and combined it represents the joining of the bride and groom as one, a joining that cannot be separated once it is done.

You may have noticed an elemental theme with unity ceremonies, and indeed there is. Another type of ceremony uses water. The water can be colored with dye and poured by the bride and groom into a third water container to create a new color. For example, the bride may have red water and the groom may have blue water, which combines to make purple water that cannot be separated back into red and blue. Yet another type of ceremony that uses liquid is the wine ceremony, where the bride and groom each pour wine into a glass that they both drink from.

As you can see, there are many different wedding unity ceremonies that can be performed to symbolize the joining of husband and wife. Which type of ceremony you choose may depend upon your religion and your personal preferences. For example, the unity candle is most often done in a church ceremony while the sand and/or water unity ceremony is popular for outdoor weddings, especially those taking place on the beach or those that have a beach theme. The rules regarding unity ceremonies aren't set in stone, which means you can choose what is most meaningful for you.
