Traditional Wedding Ceremony Wording

If you are planning a traditional wedding, then you will need to research traditional wedding ceremony wording. The wording is a very important part of your special day and should be meaningful to you and your beloved. Whether you are having a religious wedding or a non-religious wedding, some of the words will still be the same. Your officiant will go over the words to be used prior to your wedding, or you can choose your own. Here are some tips that can help you decide on the words that will be spoken on your special day.

The opening words of the officiant are perhaps some of the most traditional of the entire ceremony. As you are probably already aware, the opening words go something like this: Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here in the presence of these friends and family to join Bride's Name and Groom's Name in holy matrimony, which is honorable among all men and is not to be entered into lightly or unadvisedly, but rather reverently, advisedly and solemnly. Into this estate these two people present are to be joined. If any person here feels these two should not be joined together in marriage speak now and forever hold their peace.

At this point in the ceremony, there would be a moment of silence. Of course, if someone did object to the marriage they would speak up at this point but that rarely happens except of course in the movies! The next part of the ceremony where traditional wording is used is the exchange of vows. The officiant will speak and have the bride and groom repeat after him. The bride and groom will take turns answering the following:

Do you (Name) take (Name) to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together in holy matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, in sadness and in joy, forsaking all others for as long as you both shall live? At this point of course, the words I Do are to be spoken. The end of the ceremony is the declaration of marriage, when starts with 'By the power vested in me' and ends with 'You may kiss the bride.' Traditional wedding ceremony wording may be changed to suit your personal style and preferences.
