Understanding the Wedding Ceremony Order
![]() |
The wedding ceremony order is important when it comes to your traditional wedding day. The first thing that happens is the seating of the VIPs which are the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom. Next, the groom and officiant make their entrance. At this point, a brief introduction is given by the officiant. Music will be played and the mothers of the bride and groom light the Unity candle if such a candle will be used for the ceremony. Now is the time that the groomsmen walk down the aisle. Often, each groomsman is paired off with a bridesmaid.
Next, the ring bearer and flower girl walk down the aisle. The flower girl scatters petals behind her for the bride to walk on. Then the maid or matron of honor enters, after which the bridal music begins. At this point the bride takes her walk down the aisle, on the arm of her escort. The escort is usually her father, or another male relative if her father is deceased or estranged. After the bride reaches the altar the music stops and the opening speech is given by the officiant. There may be a prayer before the opening speech depending on the religion of the bride and groom.
After this is the declaration of intent and the exchange of vow. At this point, there is a second reading by the officiant on the subject of the sacred value of marriage between husband and wife. Now the rings will be exchanged. If there is a Unity candle it will be lit by the bride and groom following the exchange of the rings. After that, the final speech is given by the officiant and the couple is announced as husband and wife. At this point, the first kiss as a married couple will take place. The couple is introduced and the recessional music is played.
Following the wedding ceremony order described above comes the exiting of the church and the entering of the reception. The bride and groom exit first, followed by the bridal party then the guests. The entire group then travels to the reception. At the average wedding reception there will be speeches given and a ceremonial cutting of the cake. Some receptions also include music, dancing and a full menu. If you need more information about the wedding order, there are plenty of books on the subject that can help you. Or, you can hire a planner who will take care of the entire process.
