What You Should Know About Wedding Ceremony Etiquette

Wedding ceremony etiquette is important when it comes to your most special day. Whether you're having a traditional wedding or a non-traditional wedding, etiquette is very important for you and your guests. In this article we will discuss some basic protocol for weddings so you will get a better idea about what is expected at your wedding and what is not. The first thing to consider is the seating. At a Christian wedding, the bride's family sits on the left and the groom's family sits on the right. At a Jewish wedding, things are reversed and the bride's family sits on the right with the groom's family on the left.

Another part of etiquette is addressing your invitations properly. You will want to include the name of the bride and groom, the date, time and location of the wedding, and a request for RSVP. If your wedding is outside, make sure to specify this on your invitations. If your wedding is especially formal or casual, specify this also. You don't want your guests to come dressed inappropriately. Even if it doesn't bother you, they may feel out of place. It is important that your guests feel comfortable at your wedding.

Part of making guests comfortable is seating them next to people they will feel comfortable around. If certain members of your family are embroiled in a feud, you should not seat them close together in an attempt to reconcile them. Another touchy yet important part of wedding etiquette is who pays for what. Traditionally the bride's family pays for the reception, rings, church fees, invitations, flowers, transportation and lodging. The groom's family is expected to cover the bride's ring, clergy fees, rehearsal dinner and groomsmen expenses.

Wedding ceremony etiquette doesn't have to be hard to understand. If you are using the services of a wedding planner, he or she can teach you everything you need to know about protocol. If you are not using a wedding planner, there are plenty of books written about wedding etiquette. Here are some educational guides to help you: Essential Guide to Wedding Etiquette by Sharon Naylor, Wedding Etiquette by Antonia Swinson and Bride's Book of Etiquette by Brides Magazine.
